Annotation

Sixty years (1890-1950) of unparliamentary language use by a subset of New Zealand parliamentarians was searched. Four perceptible periods appeared. The ‘principal users’ of unparliamentary language were distinguished. Outcomes display that ‘power’ existed in the ‘non-participation’ of a linguistic practice. Raised frequency of use pointed to a ‘discontinuity’ in the Community of Practice.
