Annotation

This paper explores the communicative functions of visual metonymies in a muster of child picture books written and illustrated by Anthony Browne. Visual metonymies seem to be employed in Browne’s picture books basically to stress or denigrate a character’s status over another fictional actor, to impute negative traits or attitudes to the chief characters and, in turn, to bode what will come in the story.
