In Guernsey, only lately the indigenous former vernacular has been granted any value, at either bottom-up or government level: as its vitality decreases (progressively swiftly), its observed worth for individual and collective identification has waxed. Yet efficient top-down measures to raise speaker number and fluency seem to be low on the agenda. This paper examines this socio-political background's implications for language policy.
