Annotation

This paper examines language use and investment amid Somali-speaking children and adolescents in Sweden, via group interviews/survey data. Forward Somali language ability was observed as required for being skilled to succeed as ‘culturally authentic’. The results illustrate in many ways the battles it involves to preserve and evolve a minoritised language in a majority language context and the intricate ‘ideological enterprise’ of language acquisition with its educational and ethical quandaries.
