This paper proposes the first systematic inquiry of cancer as a metaphor in modern English. Thus, it supplies detailed proof, and added shade, for Sontag’s critique of cancer as a metaphor and advances a commentation for the current pertinacity of this metaphor notwithstanding its contentious status.
