Very little tests have handled literary metaphor's neurophysiological underpinnings. This study employs Event-Related brain Potentials (ERPs) to examine the temporal dynamics of grasping metaphors from Italian poems and novels. Results bid material to debate ideas advanced in pragmatics, literary studies, and cognitive neuroscience of literature, like weak implicature condensation, the foregrounding, and the relation between a metaphor and its context.
