This paper handles fat talk (FT), or self-reducing talk about the body, common amid US women and increasingly amid men. This genre is hard to get at via traditional sociolinguistic methods as it is curt and emerges unprompted in casual conversation. The new citizen sociolinguistic method created greater variety in FT expressions, was less methodologically taxing, and unveiled that FT happens otherwise in same sex than in mixed sex interactions.
