This paper explores e-mail apologies sent by undergraduate university students to professors. A corpus of 200 messages is assayed according to the kind of violation, the nature of the apology and the diverse strategies employed. The responsibility category was found to be the most potent factor impacting both positive and negative appraisal of the apologies, followed by matters regarding motive, and to a much lesser degree, style and timing.
