This article tries to erect a model of how scholastikos jokes act, how the stereotype is built and riveted, how this differs from other “stupid” stereotypes employed elsewhere in the classical jokebook Philogelos (mostly ethnic-based stereotypes), and potential social and cultural fears bound up in the scholastikos character.
