This paper regards Italian special questions conveying surprise and question-exclamatives conveying surprise-disapproval. Both sentence types are prefaced by the adversative particle ma. In order to better grasp the role of prosody and gesture in these structures with respect to syntax, some experiments of sentence production and sentence elicitation are run. The findings indicate an integrated model of the three elements: syntax, prosody and gestures.
