This paper states that the compliment responses (CRs) of Iranian English as a foreign language (EFL) learners were analogous to those of native English speakers concerning global strategies, but to some extent affected by Iranian cultural values. For EFL speakers, pragmatic competence may be sorely regulated by L1 conventions. The paper conduces to learning and teaching pragmatics in the EFL context.
