Annotation

This inquiry explores the use of mother tongues and official languages in primary linguistically homogeneous classrooms in (rural) Kenya and the potential effect of this use. Results state that in lieu of using mother tongues to teach, teachers employ Kiswahili (a national and co-official language) and English (an official language) in diverse ways to teach content subjects; mathematics, science, social/religious studies, thus making the classrooms bilingual.
