Annotation
Criticism of Austin's (1962: 'How to do things with words') classification of illocutionary forces. M. proposes an alternative taxonomy. Two striking characteristics of M.'s approach: (i) he does not only regard the first person simple present indicative active form of performative verbs as performative uses of those verbs, but also uses in the passive, with 'would like to', 'would', 'will', and 'let me'; (ii) he ends up with a twofold distinction that corresponds closely with Austin's distinction - rejected by Austin himself - between 'constatives' and 'performatives'.
