Annotation

Based on the assay of a collection of 135 recorded instances of the phenomenon, this paper argues that well-prefacing is a practice speakers use to overtly cast a repair solution as a noteworthy revision of the inadequate (but not wholly wrong) formulation it is moving away from. Data are in British and American English.
