Annotation

An attempt to identify some of the contextual factors inducing the choice of the English perfect by a speaker and the construction of particular interpretations by the hearer. Considerable space is devoted to how these interpretations are formed or how the listener arrives at inferences by correlating the linguistic form of the message with its pragmatic context; such inferences are called 'pragmatic inferences'.
