Annotation

Drawing from the Providence Corpus of Childes, this paper deals with ironic comments in mothers' child-directed speech during the first four years of the child's life. It reveals that the child is often not the actual addressee, but rather the message overhearer. The most common ironic markers in the identified ironic utterances were rhetorical questions and hyperboles.
