Annotation

Believing that to communicate is to act, M. develops the general part of a general theory of communication. By means of a logic of action he explicates concepts like 'attempt to communicate'('Kommunikationsversuch'), 'understanding an attempt to communicate', 'success of communication' ('Kommunikationserfolg'). These explications are made without requiring other terms than terms of a logic of action, especially 'doing', 'believing', 'intending'. Since the theory of meaning developed by Grice (1957: 'Meaning') is understood by M. as a proposal to explicate the concept of 'attempt to communicate' he examines in detail Grice's theory and the discussion it has set off.
