Annotation
The article examines the intersection of identity, stance-taking and code choice in the context of 2011 Egyptian uprising. The analysis of three examples of public discourse illustrates the role that code-switching between standard Arabic (SA), Egyptian colloquial Arabic (ECA) and English plays as a tool to index distinct political stances during a revolutionary period in the history of modern Egypt. The study cements the role that linguistic codes, with their distinct connotations, can play as a classification resource and an identity builder in public discourse.
