Annotation
The article conceptualizes impoliteness-oriented discourse on Arabic Twitter as a resource for the negotiation of Islamic moral order. The data set consists of a triggering tweet that indirectly questioned Islamic moral order and the vast responses the attack generated to repair the damaged collective face. The main strategy identified is what the author terms “divine (im)politeness” or intertextually referencing religious texts in favor of (or against) the existing (im)moral order. The article captures one moment of a historic shift in Islamic moral order and the role that impoliteness plays in digital Arabic contexts.
