Annotation

This contribution argues that a revival of structural gender linguistics only seems meaningful and can only be achieved if its analyses internalize recent theoretical developments in the field of linguistic gender studies. This requires a reconceptualization of (genderized) language structures in the light of poststructuralist theories, namely as a result of discursive materialization processes in language use. On a methodological level, we discuss how de-essentialization as a central aspect of poststructuralist approaches can be operationalized in various dimensions of structure-oriented linguistic analysis, namely in contrastive linguistics, historical linguistics, and lexicogrammatic and pragmatic analyses. A contrastive analysis of pronominalization patterns in English and German underpins the discussion.
