Annotation

The author tries to show that the interpretation of sentence adverbs, more specifically modal adverbs such as 'obviously', 'clearly', 'certainly', 'probably', etc., depends crucially on pragmatic considerations, especially the speaker's beliefs about the availability to the hearer of evidence from which his assertion follows as a conclusion.
