Endeavor to describe an unusual diglossia situation in an illiterate face-to-face society (the Yanomama, a tropical rain forest Indian tribe of South America). Evidence is presented to justify reconsideration of certain claims pertinent to linguistic diversity, language acquisition, and language change.
