Annotation

M. claims that it is impossible to hold the following two assumptions simultaneously: (i) grammar is pragmatically transparent, i.e. the principles involved in the derivation do not obscure properties having crucial pragmatic consequences; (ii) the principles of the pragmatic component are grammar-free, i.e. they have to do with the content of sentences but are independent of the form.
