After the discussion of a number of theoretical concepts a new approach to the phenomenon of linguistic change is empirically tested. Linguistic change is found to be influenced by the existence of competing social groups which use language to express and enforce group identity. Social and linguistic attitudes, as well as the 'verbal intensity' of the speaker's professional occupation turned out among the significant factors.
