Annotation

This paper examines patterns of use, frequency, and register variability of intensifiers, which are grouped into maximisers, boosters, compromisers, approximators, diminishers, and minimisers, in Nigerian English. The data were extracted from the International Corpus of English-Nigeria, and these were compared with data from the International Corpus of English-Great Britain. The results indicate that, based on the forms that were shown to function as intensifiers in British English, it appears Nigerian English users utilise intensifiers less frequently, exhibit lower register variability in the use of these intensifiers, and show a distinct preference pattern for very few individual intensifiers. However, Nigerian English does not have a restricted inventory of intensifiers compared to British English. The study concludes that the similarities and differences may be linked to the linguistic nature of some intensifiers and the context of interaction.
