The main claim is that, in addition to the semantic relations which can be represented in terms of intersecting, hierarchically structured semantic categories, relations between lexical entries in non-adjacent categories can be captured by means of via-rules of two basic types: semantic and pragmatic. These via-rules provide a solution to some difficulties with the description of the role of extralinguistic knowlegde in lexical relations.
