N. discusses problems of developing a lexical component of a grammar on the basis of problems of multiple reference (polysemy); he analyzes the mechanisms of reference (ostensive and descriptive), arriving at the view that the semantics/pragmatics distinction cannot be drawn. This leads to a discussion of the nature of the knowledge of meaning, and a discussion of a variety of problems and linguistic phenomena.
