An attempt to identify, in information processing terms, the elementary functional components of the mental lexicon and their interrelations. In particular the independent status of lexical codes for written and spoken language, their mutual relations and relations to a language-free cognitive representation, are considered. Evidence is based on adult aphasics' performance in language transcoding tasks.
