This study is an attempt to fill the gap that exists in the domain of the study of the relation between prosody and attitude: its aim is to determine the extent to which intonation can be said to convey attitudinal meaning. It contains a review of the existing literature on the topic and the psycholinguistic literature on the recognition of emotion in general, presents experimental data, and offers a constructive proposal for treating the matter.
