The relevance of the notion 'communicative distance' is tested with respect to a set of empirical data related to Japanese. It is suggested that various kinds of linguistic mechanisms can create and indicate varying communicative distances more suitable for the users of such mechanisms in a one- or two-way communication, regardless of whether the communication takes place in a monolingual or bilingual situation.
