Annotation

P. studies the social uses of literacy on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation (Oregon), to demonstrate the ways in which a view of literacy as a mode of communication (among other modes) can further our understanding of cultural variation in pattern use. Implications for literacy programs are pointed out.
