A general semiotic framework for the analysis of text is sketched; it is shown that texts cannot be understood adequately without the differentiation of meaning and use of signs; the iconic use of signs is investigated; the pragmatic differences between semantically equivalent syntactic constructions in discourse are shown. On this basis a programmatic approach to the analysis of creativity in poetic communication is sketched and applied to a number of literary texts.
