With reference to an example of an artificial intelligence speech act plan (for requests), it is shown that AI can help to explain (i) preparatory utterances, (ii) the repair of conversational breakdowns, (iii) felicity conditions on speech acts, (iv) listeners inferences, (v) speaker inferences, and (vi) indirect speech acts.
