An analysis of sentences containing parentheticals, based on the claim that they present a special display of point of view relations. Two types of such constructions are distinguished on the basis of their differences in syntax, semantics, use, and intonation. The structural representations of these types are discussed, along with previous analyses of these constructions; and certain anaphora peculiarities they have are shown to obey a general performance constraint on coreference.
