Annotation

On the basis of a model of language proficiency (taking into account grammatical well-formedness, speech act rules, functional elaboration and code diversity), R. and T. conclude (after illustrating their claims with examples of language use in Singapore) that terms such as native language, mother tongue and second language may not have clear-cut meanings in multi-lingual societies where English has taken on significant internal functions.
