Starting from Lakoff's and Anscombre & Ducrot's distinction between two types of 'mais' (in French) or 'but' (in English), the 'corrective' and the 'argumentative' mais/but, R. shows that the latter can express either an 'indirect relation' (i.e. between two conclusions that are external to the utterance) or a 'direct relation'.
