With special reference to gerunds, R. argues that an adequate model of language acquisition must state an important connection between the 'instantaneous' model (associated with Chomsky, and relying heavily on principles of universal grammar) and the 'interactive' model (related to pragmatic, cognitive, semantic, and perceptual theories).
