The problems and possibilities of analyzing language on the basis of an 'autonomous-syntax' view vs. an integrated view of syntax, semantics and pragmatics are approached through an analysis of some linguistic problems (the problems of subject control and forms of occurrence of subjects in embedded infinitives, and of syntactic vs. thematic explanation of lexically bound control). The analysis results in an argument for the integrative view.
