An empirical inquiry into some aspects of the use and meaning of the 'expanded form', a construction consisting of a form of 'be' and an '-ing' participle. The perspective adopted is that of 'dynamic synchrony', maintaining that an adequate description of the meaning of a construction can only be successful if the communicative context of use is taken into account.
