S. argues that Habermas' introduction of the notion communicative competence meant progress, but at the expense of the exactness and explicitness of Chomsky's model of language. He attempts to restore this explicitness and to bring Chomsky's work on the one hand and Austin and Searle's speech act theory on the other closer together.
