A general approach to the problem of the embedding of verbal behavior in the general context of interpersonal interaction. More particularly S. investigates different types of verbal action which constitute the system of actions with regard to 'relationship'. Next to some introductory chapters on methodology and terminology, on some of the literature concerning the notion of interpersonal relationships and on the theoretical status of this term, the main part of the book concerns the development of a model of the different functions of language, and more particularly of how the interpersonal function of language in communication is realized in face-to-face interaction and everyday talk.
