S. tries to answer the question of how to prove or disprove hypotheses about the meaning of sentences or utterances without having to rely on the intuitions of native speakers. This can be done by empirically investigating their use. The author illustrates her point by adducing the 'non-verbal language of German motorists' (in which she distinguishes illocutionary roles, propositions and references) as a simple example.
