It is argued that (i) Austin's definition of four classes of illocutionary acts relies implicitly upon hierarchies of felicity conditions; (ii) expositives, to be singled out as meta-discoursive speech acts, can be divided into four groups according to the above criterion; (iii) illocutionary acts can also be classified with respect to their perlocutionary objects.
