Annotation

Various determinants of cultural variability in adult-child conversation are discussed: beliefs about the status and role of the child in society, the social organization of caregiving, and folk beliefs about how children learn language. Learning to talk about experiences in the past (observed in two societies: white middle class in Northern California, and the Kaluli of Papua New Guinea) serves as an illustration.
