In the first part, two cases of French-German lexical contrast are discussed with respect to their relevance for the questions of how lexical meaning is used in acts of referring, and how the lexicon is internally organized. In the second part, some aspects of text understanding with respect to cross-language structural differences and concomitant ways of conveying information are discussed.
