Annotation

Seeing the shortcomings of traditional speech act inventories, A. ascribes to any speech act a threefold functional status: (i) relative to its propositional content (including 'direction of fit'), (ii) relative to the interaction it forms part of, and(iii) relative to the textual structure it helps to establish. In the first of these dimensions, A. suggests some main categories.
