Annotation
S. attacks the view that for every sentence the literal meaning of the sentence can be conceived as the meaning it has independently of any context whatever, i.e. as the meaning it has in the zero or null context. He argues that the literal meaning of alarge class of sentences can only be understood against a set of background assumptions about the context in which the sentence could be appropriately used.
