An attempt to incorporate the topic-comment articulation in a generative grammar without global constraints and without semantically relevant transformations. One of the conclusions is that apart from the meaning proper and the presuppositions of a sentence, there is a third semantic unit, viz. 'allegation' (implied by the positive sentence, while neither it nor its negation is entailed by the corresponding negative sentence).
