Four questions are asked concerning the interaction-language relationship: (i) Are social and linguistic knowledge acquired simultaneously? (ii) Are there facilitating effects of one system on the other? (iii) How much is the relationship mediated by the internal properties of the child? (iv) Is the relationship based on structural commonalities of the two systems? Four positions with respect to these questions are discussed.
