S. defines a 'use of language' as a category of language acts (corresponding to the notion of illocutionary force). In performing a language act, the speaker conforms to conventions according to which the occurrence of expressions used by him indicates that particular conditions must obtain if the act is to succeed. A 'use of a word' is defined as any package of conditions which can thus be indicated by the use of some expression.
